A good quality oven range makes all the difference.

When you’ve got good quality appliances in your kitchen, you notice the difference in your cooking. The quality of the food is better and the prep time often gets cut down.

With all the available oven ranges on the market, it’s hard to know which one suits you the best.

Let’s review the Viking Professional Range.

What is the Viking Professional Range?

The Viking Professional Range is a group of freestanding ranges that accommodate all different types of cooking requirements.

The Viking Professional Range incorporates the three, four and five series, as well as the Tuscany models. Some models in the Viking Professional Range operate on gas or electric only, while others are dual fuel.

The Viking Professional Range also provides you with a variety of different sizes, depending on the amount of space you have in your kitchen. Additionally, each range offers a different number of sealed burners – again, depending on your preferences.

For the sake of continuity, we’re going to be looking at one particular model in the Viking Professional Range. This will help you to get a good idea of the quality and build of the Viking Professional Range as a whole.

While size and specifications may vary, all oven ranges in the Viking Professional Range are manufactured to the same quality standards. Cooking abilities will vary between these models, but build quality and brand trust will not.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at a Viking Professional Range oven.

What is the Viking Professional Range

Specifications of the Viking Professional Range

Let’s take a look at the specifications of the 48-inch Dual Fuel Oven found in the Viking Professional Range. This particular oven range is one of the largest available, making it a powerful commercial-type model.

This Viking Professional Range model boasts six burners with brass flame ports. The highest burner emits 23,000 Btu’s, while the lowest accommodates for great simmering at 8,000 Btu’s.

The five burners are divided into three different burner sizes, allowing for all different types of pots and pans. This Viking Professional Range model allows for a low simmer across all burners, regardless of Btu output.

The ignition system ensures automatic re-ignition should the flame go out. The cast-iron griddle is easily removable for cleaning purposes. The oven door itself has gentle-close technology, allowing it to sit effortlessly until it’s a few centimeters from the oven.

The oven racks themselves are full extension, which means they can also be easily removed for cleaning. Because this Viking Professional Range oven is dual fuel, the oven has a self-cleaning option.

The customer can remove all additional features including grates and knobs for an extra thorough clean.

Things to Remember When Using the Viking Professional Range

Now, that we’ve looked at the 48-inch dual fuel oven in the Viking Professional Range and discussed its specifications let’s talk about what to remember when using an oven like this.

Because this is the 48-inch dual fuel model, the two ovens can be operated separately. This split baking and broiling features allow for faster preheat times and gives you greater control over your cooking.

The reversing convection fan located in the main oven is more extensive than most convection fans available on the market. This ensures that you experience a more even cook or bake every time – even when baking large amounts of food.

This Viking Professional Range model comes with three broiling features, allowing for delicate broiling, top-brown broiling, and their new low-broil mode.

The front gas burners emit 23,000 Btu’s which allow for fast, efficient cook time. In the back right-hand corner, the gas burners found here emit 15,000 Btu’s while the last gas burner on the rear left-hand side has a Btu output of 8,000.

The 48-inch dual fuel oven found in the Viking Professional Range has 12 different oven modes, including convection bake, medium broil, self-clean, and convection dehydration.

The Dacor ER48D is by far the cheapest dual fuel oven range that we are comparing. It’s on the market for $5,000 less than the Viking Professional Range model. However, sometimes spending more money on quality can pay off.

It offers a similar range of available colors and is freestanding with similar width and height measurements. However, it comes with a clock, which our Viking Professional Range model doesn’t.

The Dacor ER48D’s main burner outputs are significantly lower than the Viking VDR7486G, coming in at just 18,000 compared to 23,000 Btu’s. It also has six sealed burners.

The most significant difference between the Dacor ER48D and our Viking Professional Range model is the control system. The Dacor ER48D is operated digitally, whereas out Viking Professional Range model uses knobs.

Digital can be slightly harder to control as there can be more technical issues.

The American Range ARR4842GDDF only comes in stainless steel, limiting your choice when it comes to appearance. The primary oven capacity of the American Range is the same as the Viking Professional Range model.

Interestingly, the secondary oven on the American Range ARR4842GDDF is ever so slightly larger than the Viking VDR7486G’s counterpart. Instead of using knobs, the American Range ARR4842GDDF utilizes digital, which again can get you into trouble if there are issues with the electrics.

Lastly, the American Range ARR4842GDDF only comes with two oven racks, whereas our Viking Professional Range model provides you with five.

Now, we’ll run through the technical aspects of the Ilve UMT12055DMP:

The Ilve UMT12055DMP is the second cheapest dual fuel oven range we’re reviewing against our Viking Professional Range model. It is only available in stainless steel and has five gas burners instead of six.

However, it does come with a warming drawer and removable door, two features that our Viking Professional Range don’t have.

We weren’t too impressed with the Btu output on the burners. The highest Btu output available is 15,500, while the lowest is a mere 7,000. Additionally, the Ilve UMT12055DMP doesn’t come with a griddle, while the other three dual fuel oven ranges do.

The most significant difference that we are opposed to with the Ilve UMT12055DMP is that it’s not self-cleaning. Most dual fuel oven ranges have this feature.

Advantages of the Viking Professional Range

Advantages of the Viking Professional Range

Now that we’ve compared our Viking Professional Range model with other similar kitchen appliances, let’s take a look at the benefits it possesses:

  • Oven: customers are saying that the diversity in available oven features is a massive plus. With 12 oven modes to choose from, there is no limit on the amount of cooking and baking you can do. Another advantage to this Viking Professional Range model is its ability to heat up quickly. The oven, in particular, heats up fast and cools down quickly, which consumers like.
  • Stove: this Viking Professional Range model brings its fast-heating abilities up to the stove top as well. Customers have said that they love the quick boil feature with burners that work well and appear to have lots of life still left in them.
  • Cleaning: as well as looking beautiful, this Viking Professional Range model is said to be very easy to keep clean. The stainless steel models look shiny and high quality. Because it’s manufactured with high-quality materials, you can just use water to clean it. This will quickly get rid of any marks or smudges.

Disadvantages of the Viking Professional Range

Disadvantages of the Viking Professional Range

We’ve talked about the advantages of buying a Viking Professional Range model. Now, let’s take a more critical approach and discuss the disadvantages of the Viking VDR7486G:

  • Oven Fan: while the convection fans that are featured with this Viking Professional Range model are a great addition to balanced cooking, they can prove to be annoying at times. The convection fans have been said to keep turning around after the oven has been turned off, to eradicate any residual hot air. This can result in the oven making additional noise for over an hour after baking.
  • Size: while the 48-inch dual fuel oven is great if you’re someone who enjoys cooking on a regular basis, you may find it a bit too heavy-duty if your kitchen is space conscious. The biggest downside to the size is that there is not 30-inch model currently available in the Viking Professional Range. To get these features, you have to invest in the 48-inch model.
  • Exclusive Features: Viking claims in their specifications that the new features they have lined up in the Viking Professional Range are exclusive. However, additions like the gentle-close door and easy-to-clean griddle aren’t unique to these models. This means that you can potentially get the same or similar features in a cheaper brand.
